El Corazón: The Stories of a Colorado Corn Mother
El Corazón is five decades in the making. The full-color book is 104 pages with three sections which embrace my culture past. In the first section, “Vanishing Horizons,” the stories, poems and songs of the early 1900s are remembered.
Next, “Heritage Recovery,” describes how to search for homestead papers, how to care for old photographs, and women’s handwork. A list of teas and dyes gives readers a way to reach into their past, using culture to survive now.
In the third section, “Heritage Cookbook—Recipes for cultural interest, YUM effect and comfort,” many recipes reflect the Northern New Mexico, Southern Colorado way of life in the 1800s and 1900s. Making biscochitos, anise cookies, is a Christmas tradition and a YUM way of remembering Abuelita!
